Sapporo is famous for its miso, Asahikawa is famous for its soy sauce, and Hakodate is famous for its salt ramen, but a restaurant has opened in Obihiro where you can enjoy delicious miso ramen.

This time, we visited Menya Kotaro, which opened on August 4, 2023, for an interview.

Menya Kotaro is located on Yayoi Street, about 7 minutes by car from Obihiro Station. If you are visiting by bus, take a bus from Obihiro Station Bus Terminal via Ito-Yokado, get off at Nishi 3-jo 26-chome, and walk for 4 minutes.

I arrived at the store at 2pm on a weekday, well past lunch time, but it was still crowded and there were people waiting.

I ordered the most popular menu item, “Goku Miso Ramen,” topped with a slice of pork belly chashu. Up to 2 pieces of char siu toppings are allowed.

The soup is based on pork bones and chicken bones simmered over low heat for 10 hours, and although the pork bones are a little strong, it doesn’t have any taste at all. The miso is a blend of red, white, and Hatcho miso. It contains pastes such as apples, carrots, onions, and flavored vegetables, giving it a natural sweetness. You can feel the richness of miso, but it’s a refreshing soup that you can drink till the end.

It is topped with grated ginger, and when dissolved in the soup, you can enjoy a different taste.

If you order, you can get “wari soup” for free. It looks greasy, but it’s not at all.

The noodles are medium-thick, curly noodles from Sapporo’s Nishiyama Seimen, and go well with the soup. Apparently, they chose the one that best suited them from among dozens of different types of noodles.

The char siu is this thick! It seems that the thickness varies depending on the part, but it is tender because it has been carefully stewed for a long time, and it is not as greasy as pork belly. It is said to be this thick because it is soft and cannot be sliced ​​thinly. It is roasted before being served, so it has a nice aroma. We prepare over 20kg every day, but it’s still not enough, so we’re taking a break from “Charshu Ramen”.

Although the menma is extremely thick, it is hand-cut and tender, and is stewed with its own unique flavor, making it a satisfying meal.

“Hormone fried rice” is also a popular menu item. Simply seasoned egg fried rice is topped with plenty of offal slowly simmered in homemade sauce. Apparently, the offal is boiled and then allowed to rest to allow the flavors to meld. Fried rice is simple, so the richly seasoned offal goes well with it.

I don’t like the unique texture of horumon, but this horumon was soft and delicious. “Hormone Ramen” with this hormone is the second most popular menu item. Of course, it goes perfectly with ramen.

In addition to ramen, the restaurant also offers other dishes such as “Yakisoba with red bean paste” and “Chinese rice bowl” that were inherited from “Chinese Ramen Shanghai (hereinafter referred to as Shanghai)”, where the owner worked before starting his own business*.

*“Yakisoba with red bean paste” and “Chinese bowl” have been suspended for a while and are not currently on the menu (October 2023).

“Kotarou” is the name of my dog.The shopkeeper is polite and works well.

We spoke to the owner, Takuya Takahashi.

The store’s name, “Kotarou,” comes from the name of their beloved dog who passed away last year (2022). He had decided on a name for the store from the moment he decided to open it.

Mr. Takahashi is from Obihiro, and has been friends with the owner of the nearby ramen shop “Shanghai” as a family member since he was a child. en I was in high school, I worked part-time in Shanghai.

After graduating from school in Sapporo, I worked in Sapporo, but when I was 28, I returned to Obihiro and started working in Shanghai. There was apparently talk of taking over “Shanghai,” but the owner wanted to continue the business a little longer, so they decided to open their own store. “Eventually, I might return to Shanghai to take over the store,” he says.

The taste of the hormone is based on the taste of “Shanghai” and has been arranged uniquely. Even now, her mother still works at “Shanghai,” and she comes to help when the store is busy.

“My husband and I run the business, but we don’t really have enough people. We’re recruiting, but we haven’t received many applications.”

Even during the free time between daytime and nighttime business hours and on holidays, I hardly take any time off to prepare food, and due to this summer’s heat and hard work, I’ve lost more than 10kg since I opened the store. Preparation can sometimes take until midnight.

“I didn’t expect so many customers to come. I’m the only one cooking, so when it’s busy, you may have to wait for more than 30 minutes. I’m very sorry.” Mr. Takahashi.

You can feel his careful workmanship and good personality. Some customers say they’ll have to wait even an hour. I understand the feeling of wanting to eat even if you wait.
